Judah & Tamar: Jesus Ancestors The Committed Adultry!

Judah** (one of Jesus' ancestors) and **Tamar**—a story of deception and unexpected righteousness in Genesis 38.

### **The Story of Judah and Tamar (Genesis 38)**

Judah (son of Jacob/Israel) had three sons: **Er, Onan, and Shelah**.

1. **Judah arranged for his firstborn, Er, to marry Tamar**, but Er was wicked and God struck him dead (v. 7).

2. Following the custom of *levirate marriage* (Deuteronomy 25:5-6), **Judah gave Tamar to his second son, Onan**, but he refused to father a child for his dead brother, so God struck him dead too (v. 10).

3. **Judah promised Shelah (his third son) to Tamar** but delayed giving him to her, fearing he might also die (v. 11).

Tamar, realizing Judah had no intention of fulfilling his duty, **disguised herself as a prostitute** and tricked Judah into sleeping with her (vv. 14-18). She became pregnant, and when Judah discovered this, he initially ordered her execution for adultery—until she revealed that *he* was the father (vv. 24-26).

### **Why This Matters in Jesus' Lineage**

- **Tamar bore twins, Perez and Zerah** (Genesis 38:27-30).

- **Perez became an ancestor of Jesus** (Matthew 1:3, Luke 3:33).

- Despite the deception, Judah acknowledged Tamar’s righteousness in seeking justice (v. 26), and God honored her faith by including her in the Messiah’s genealogy.

This is one of several surprising women (Rahab, Ruth, Bathsheba) listed in Jesus' lineage (Matthew 1), showing God’s grace in flawed family lines.

To summarize, **two key ancestors of Jesus** were involved in adultery (or scandalous sexual situations) in His genealogy:

### 1. **Judah & Tamar** (Genesis 38)

   - **Judah** (son of Jacob) slept with his daughter-in-law **Tamar** (who disguised herself as a prostitute).

   - Though deception was involved, Judah acknowledged Tamar's righteousness in securing her rightful offspring.

   - Their son **Perez** became an ancestor of Jesus (Matthew 1:3).

### 2. **David & Bathsheba** (2 Samuel 11)

   - **King David** committed adultery with **Bathsheba** (the wife of Uriah the Hittite) and then arranged Uriah’s death to cover it up.

   - After repentance (Psalm 51), their son **Solomon** continued the line leading to Jesus (Matthew 1:6).

### Bonus: **Rahab** (Matthew 1:5)

   - Though not an adulteress, **Rahab** was a former prostitute in Jericho who helped Israel’s spies (Joshua 2).

   - She married **Salmon** and became the mother of **Boaz** (ancestor of David and Jesus).

### Why This Matters:

- Jesus’ lineage includes flawed people, showing **God’s grace and redemption**.

- Matthew 1 highlights these stories to emphasize that **Jesus came for sinners** (Matthew 9:13).
